The decoration was introduced by order of Brig. Gen. Zygmunt Berling - commander of the 1st Corps of the Polish Armed Forces in the USSR, probably in late October or early November 1943. It was intended to commemorate the first victory over the Germans and to honor the memory of the fallen. The medal being auctioned is a much rarer variant of the decoration, which was awarded to participants in the battle of Lenino.
