Lot description Show orginal version
Grade: VF
Reference: RIC 435, Czapski jak 4266

Follis with the legend SARMATIA DEVICTA is one of the few ancient coins that Emeryk Hutten-Czapski had in his collection, counting it among the foreign coins "related to Polish history."

Roman coins relating to Sarmatia were also included in their collections by other collectors of the period (Mikocki, Beyer, Antoni Ryszard), considering the Sarmatians as possible ancestors of the Poles and thus referring to the centuries-old tradition of Polish historiography.

Obverse: Emperor's head in laurel wreath, to the right, in the rim legend: CONSTAN-TIVS AVG

Reverse: Victoria walking to the right, holding palm branch and trophy, at her feet a prisoner of war, in section STR, in the rim legend: SARMATIA DEVICTA

Bronze, diameter 18.0 mm, weight 2.43 g.
