The coin was made to make up for the lack of a perfunctory coin, the mintmaster of the Danzig Mint at the time, Christian Schirmer, undertook to mint it (for which he was paid 100 zlotys). As Marian Gumowski emphasized in "The Danzig Mint," it was also the first Danzig coin without the city coat of arms.
