The second of the beautiful 1586 Nagyban thalers offered in this auction.
Another variety, differing mainly in the letter N in TRAn (small, instead of large). Also different: the crown on the reverse (noticeably wider) or the royal bust (smaller head, larger hand).
Mint condition confirmed by NGC MS62 grading. Very good detail, natural mint luster preserved. Very attractive, especially as a 16th century thaler!
Nagyban thalers, in addition to their interesting history, are also characterized by beautiful workmanship. As Tadeusz Kalkowski stressed, they are"an example of Renaissance coinage. Thenaturalism of the royal portrait on the obverse is matched here by the brightness of the composition of the reverse."
