Lot description Show orginal version
Grade: VF+
Reference: Hutten-Czapski 2754 (R2), Raczyński 370

The medal commemorates the coronation of August III as king of Poland, which took place in Wawel Cathedral.

As Marian Gumowski points out, "Groskurt here broke with classical patterns for the first time, removed all allegory prevalent in medalmaking until then, and turned directly to nature and truth. This is one of the few ancient medals on which the persons depicted are dressed in Polish costumes of the time."

The accuracy of the depiction allows us to identify specific historical figures, e.g. Cardinal Jan Aleksander Lipski (putting the crown to the king), Ignatius Zawisza or Prince Lubomirski.

Silver, diameter 55.2 mm, weight 58.24 g.

Obverse: bust of the king in armor, with a cloak, in the rim:
D. G. AVGVSTVS. III. REX. POL. M. D. LITH. D. SAX. EL.

Reverse: depiction of a coronation rite, with the king kneeling before a bishop, in the rim: CONCORDIBVS. LIBERAE GENTIS SVFFRGIIS(by unanimous free people's votes), in segment: ELECT: V.OCT: MDCCXXXIII. | CORONATVS XVII.IAN: | MDCCXXIV.
