Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was one of the main commanders of the Ottoman Empire's army during the First War. After the end of the war and the defeat of the Ottoman Empire, he opposed the partition of Turkey and led Turkey into the War of Independence. After its successful conclusion, he took office as the first president of the Republic of Turkey.
